A wood artist's thoughts on current design trends as it relates to live edge furniture and wood art...
I work with home owners & interior designers to create luxurious natural live edge wood furniture art & wood slab countertops and installations that serve as a bold sculptural statement that reflects warm inviting texture & patterns you want to touch & stare at. It's a sensory thing to inspire wellness - the natural texture & flow of the woodgrain defining the shape. In some cases I've created custom built-in features like live edge wood corner desks, natural shape wood countertops and wide plank hardwood kitchen islands, float-mount wood slab vanities for bathroom, thick wood live edge mantels & shelving, wood reception slab counters & bar tops for hospitality spaces. Many modern trends are pushing away from moody colors more towards neutral muted color pallets that dont reflect a lot of personality. Thats the beauty of handcrafted highly personalized furniture thats made just for you. Together we can choose just the right natural wood to compliment the room I've seen live edge and wood slab furniture utilized in modern minimalist spaces to serve a warm natural texture and woodgrain as well as river tables in both postmodern and maximalist decor. Some artistic furniture is very specific to the space and people its for, while other pieces are more chameleon and can fit in rustic ranch decor as well as coastal style and other blends of rustic modern. I've color matched the epoxy resin in a river dining table to the pebbletec pool decking on display through the dining table windows. I've also matched the deep blue color oceanic resin to the client's ocean view from their dining room. I've handpicked Mesquite wood and Fluorite Mineral Rock to match the natural rock faces in their home and mint green in the upholstery for a client's wood & resin headboard. Creamy, grey, sandy coastal bohemian style is a fast growing trend! I'm here for it... Buckeye Burl wood naturally features those cream & grey colors while showcasing amazing woodgrain and texture. Maple and Mappa bright blonde burlwood have long been used for veneer, but in slab form they are even more awe-inspiring. Walnut burlwood or Manzanita Driftwood is the perfect dark accent against white washed Oak flooring to create wonder. Epoxy resin tables can be used as neutral, metallic, or vibrant colorful statement tables depending on both wood slab selection & resin color choices. For those that prefer bold colorful woodgrain I often recommend Redwood, Red Gum, African Sumac, Carob, or Cottonwood Burl. For my favorite live edge river tables and color lovers, I utilize large chunks of mineral rock, crystals, and geodes selected with my clients which also infuses natural equity and value while reducing the amount of resin needed. Biophilic design is quickly a growing trend that has always fit directly with live edge furniture. This year I've started working with biophilic plant artists to incorporate both living plants or preserved moss around rustic wood slab elements or as part of the live edge table or wall art design. The vibrant green colors are great contrast with the natural woodgrain, color, and texture.
